The Williams Family EP

The Williams Family are Genise, Damien and Nicholas Williams. Hailing from Hermannsburg and Alice Springs and influenced by their grandfather Gus Williams OAM, The Williams Family singers are backed musically by their ‘Golden Guitar’ and ‘Red Ochre Award’ NIAA father Warren H Williams. They were brought up singing and playing music and were influenced by Christian gospel and country music.

In this, the international year of indigenous languages, The Therrka Endangered Languages Project was a perfect opportunity for these singers to band together and cover five of their favourite chorals and pay homage to their Central Australian Christian upbringing.

Inspired by their family’s love of music, singing has always been a part of these siblings’ lives.
The latest generation of singers from the Ntjalka family, Genise, Nicholas and Damien have been creating music from a very young age. With various family members developing and encouraging their musical talents, the trio have each maintained a passion for this creative outlet. This album is backed musically by their ‘Golden Guitar’ and ‘Red Ochre Award’ NIAA father Warren H Williams.

“Lyrical content aside, Cut Me is just as strong in its production and delivery. A constantly groovy, looping guitar sample back pedals over the thumping bass. KnD’s music is truly a collaborative effort. They write all their songs together, taking turns to bring a tune and spontaneously adding lyrics to the melodies they create”.AAA Backstage

“In Between” is the title track from their debut album and needs little explanation. Taken as a reference to their name, the word ‘apakatjah’ is a Luritja kriol word for a person of mixed race heritage. “Not quite black, not quite white. Somewhere in-between! We once perceived it to be a negative – socially constructed to separate and segregate, to divide and conquer. But now we realise that as Aboriginal people, we’re not the only ones who live this life, but many others. Time to embrace it!”
