Kristal West – And That’s Why
Kristal West is 25-year-old Indigenous Australian singer-songwriter who found a national audience in 2014, after becoming a Grand Finalist on the popular channel 9 TV show ‘The Voice’. She is granddaughter to the legendary Indigenous land rights activist, Eddie Mabo, who campaigned for ten years to eventually have the legal doctrine of terra nullius overturned. Her life centres around her music and her people. Kristal has determination, passion and drive like her late grandfather, unwavering from her dreams to be recognised for her music.
As part of the duo ZK, Kristal was mentored on ‘The Voice’ by Will.i.am. Kristal developed a huge fan base, allowing her musical career to soar to new heights. Will.i.am stated, “ZK are the most unique and authentic singers left on The Voice. There is something unique, something ancient in the way they sing”. During her time on the show she was also fortunate enough to travel to Los Angeles to visit Will.i.am’s impressive studio, gaining further insight to the music world. Kristal completed The Voice Top 8 National Tour, which she said was an unbelievable experience, further increasing her popularity Australia wide.
Kristal has developed a remarkable portfolio with clients such as Target Australia and Qantas. She has performed at, the Tjungu Festival, the NSWRL Grand Final VB Cup and the Brad Fittler Awards. She was also one of 8 winners of the nationwide Alukura songwriting competition, which saw her flown this year to Alice Springs to record at the CAAMA Music studios, while being mentored by the Stiff Gins.
Kristal’s influences include Ngaarii, Lianna La Havis, Alicia Keys, Ed Sheeran and Pia Mia, to name a few. Kristal has the ability to perform multiple genres. She is currently apart of the Short Black Opera theatre company however, her preferred styles are Pop with RnB/Soul influences. Kristal wows audiences each and every time she performs with her astonishing voice and natural ability to connect with people.
