CAAMA Music, Australia’s first Aboriginal record label, turns 35 this year and to celebrate its long history of recording, supporting and promoting Aboriginal musicians it will host a music festival in Katherine on 15 August for emerging Aboriginal artists.

The Big Rivers Community Festival will be headlined by Blekbala Mujik, Aboriginal rock legends and one of the first successes recorded by the CAAMA Music label. Recently Blekbala Mujik received the Hall of Fame Award at the National Indigenous Music Awards for their contribution to the Australian music scene over their long 30 year career.

“I always enjoy passing on the skills I’ve learned during my musical career, for the young bands coming through today” says Apaak Jupurrula Miller, founder and lead singer of Blekbala Mujik, who will be mentoring the emerging bands at the Big Rivers Festival.

The bands will also receive two days of mentoring by representatives of CAAMA Music, APRA, MusicNT, CAAMA Radio and ArtbackNT in matters of music business, rights and royalties, stage craft and media interviews.

Confirmed bands include Bininj (Croker Island), Mambali (Numbulwar), Wakal Bengkunh (Wadeye), NT Express (Numbulwar), Grant Thompson (Ngukurr) and Lazy Late Boys (Daguragu & Kalkaringi).

“CAAMA Music has had a long tradition of supporting bands from all around the NT, and are excited to now be uncovering a new crop of talent from the Top End”, says Micheal ‘Miko’ Smith, Manager of CAAMA Music.

Big Rivers Community Festival will be broadcast live by CAAMA Radio and held at 4pm on 15 August at the Old Tick Markets in Katherine (Lindsay St). Entry by gold coin donation.

  1. Hi, I’m Maureen Martin, a Country Music Presenter at City Park Radio in Launceston, Tasmania. My husband Les & I were at your “Big Rivers Festival” in Katherine last year. We sat with & became friends with Doug & Jill Kelly. We thoroughly enjoyed your artists & their music. I gave my card to someone from CAAMA, but I still haven’t heard from anyone! It’s nearly that time again this year! (Still reminiscing!!) We toured S.A., N.T. & W.A. we did 18,000K’s in 14 weeks. I would love to be able to get some of your music to play over here in Tassie. I do have some Indigenous artist’s CDs, whom we have met on our travels. I love the cultural experience.

    • Hi Maureen, Sorry for the slow reply. Thanks for your support! You can buy CAAMA Music CDs via our website and we will post them to you in Tasmania. Alternatively you can try phoning our sales manager on 08 8951 9732 and ordering over the phone. Looking forward to hearing from you!
