With a vocal range and talent equal to Gurrumul and a musical sensitivity to match, Gaykamangu’s debut album (released October 2014) is sure to turn heads across the country.
Stewart Gaykamangu was born into a musical family. His father was the keyboard player for legendary Top End band, Soft Sand, and Gurrumul is his cousin. His family includes most of the Gulf Country legends.
Stewart has performed at Garma, The Dreaming, Woodford, Adelaide Fringe, Spirit Festival, Tandanya, Desert Fringe, National Indigenous Music awards and many more.
His song “Lorrpu” (meaning White Cockatoo) won NT Pop Song of the Year and is based on an Aboriginal legend of his homeland, sung exclusively in the Yolngu language of Gupapuyngu.
Having played with every Indigenous musician of note in the Northern Territory, including Gurrumul, Iwantja, Redsand, and Saltwater Band, he is taking the time to focus on a solo career and is recording his debut solo album with CAAMA Music.
